Materials
The analysis of materials makes it possible to understand how physical properties, technical performance, and environmental characteristics influence design decisions and the behaviour of packaging throughout its life cycle.
In relation to morphologies, production processes, and models of innovation, materials constitute a fundamental dimension for interpreting the development dynamics of the packaging sector and strategies aimed at circular transition.

Read all
Polyethylene terephthalate is a thermoplastic polyester formed by the polycondensation of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, characterised by high optical clarity, notable mechanical strength, excellent gas barrier properties (particularly for CO₂ and O₂) and good heat resistance. It is available in amorphous (APET, transparent) and crystallised (CPET) variants, the latter withstanding up to 220 °C for ovenable applications.
In packaging, PET is the benchmark polymer for bottles and containers for carbonated beverages, water, juices, oil and sauces, produced by stretch-blow moulding.
It is also widely used as biaxially oriented film (BOPET) for flexible packaging, thermoformed lidding and ovenable trays (CPET).
Polietilene tereftalato (PET)
Its superior barrier properties and well-established recyclability in European collection and sorting streams make it the material of choice for high-performance food packaging.
Regulatory pressure (PPWR) and market demand are accelerating the transition to grades incorporating recycled content (rPET), making the availability of certified food-grade rPET a strategic issue for the supply chain.
Typical thicknesses for packaging films: BOPET film 12-36 µm (standard: 12-23 µm); lidding films up to 50 µm.

Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (rPET)
Read all
Recycled polyethylene terephthalate is a polyester material obtained from the collection, sorting and reprocessing of post-consumer (PCR) or post-industrial PET waste, reintroduced into the production cycle as a new raw material. It retains the chemical structure and principal performance characteristics of virgin PET (clarity, mechanical strength and gas barrier) whilst incorporating recycled content that reduces its carbon footprint relative to fossil-derived material. Quality grade depends on the decontamination process: mechanical processes can yield food-contact-compliant rPET (in accordance with EFSA guidelines), whilst chemical depolymerisation produces material with purity equivalent to virgin polymer.
Polietilene tereftalato riciclato (rPET)
In packaging, rPET is used primarily for bottles (bottle-to-bottle stream), thermoformed trays, lidding and films. Demand is growing strongly, driven by the recycled-content targets set by the PPWR and extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes.
Deposit-return systems (DRS) and efficient separate collection are key factors in ensuring the availability of food-grade rPET of sufficient quality to satisfy increasing market requirements and legislative obligations.
Typical thicknesses for packaging films: comparable to virgin PET, 12-50 µm.

Polypropylene (PP)
Read all
Polypropylene is a semi-crystalline polyolefin derived from the polymerisation of propylene, known for its favourable stiffness-to-weight ratio, heat resistance superior to that of PE (melting point 160-165 °C), chemical stability and versatility in processing. It is available in homopolymer, random copolymer and block copolymer variants, offering different property profiles in terms of stiffness, clarity and impact resistance.
Polipropilene (PP)
Its ability to form a fatigue-resistant living hinge makes it particularly suitable for flip-top closures.
In packaging, PP is employed both in moulding (injection moulding for caps, closures, containers, jars and dispensers; blow moulding and thermoforming for bottles and trays) and as a film: cast and biaxially oriented film (BOPP) for flexible packaging of snack foods, confectionery, tobacco, labels and overwrapping.
PP is suitable for hot-fill applications and resistant to a relatively broad range of chemical agents.
Biaxially oriented grades (BOPP) offer excellent clarity, resistance to greasy substances and superior print characteristics, making them a benchmark substrate in the flexible packaging industry.
Typical thicknesses for packaging films: BOPP film 12-50 µm (standard: 20-30 µm); cast PP film (CPP) 20-80 µm.

Polystyrene (PS)
Read all
Polystyrene is a thermoplastic polymer obtained by polymerising styrene, available in several structural variants: crystal PS (GPPS, transparent and brittle), high-impact PS (HIPS, rubber-toughened with polybutadiene and more ductile) and expanded polystyrene (EPS).
Polistirene (PS)
Crystal grades offer good clarity and ease of processing by injection moulding and thermoforming, but limited impact resistance and a low oxygen barrier.
PS has a significant environmental footprint, particularly in expanded form, and is difficult to recycle within conventional separate-collection streams.
In packaging, PS is used primarily as moulded and thermoformed articles: containers for bakery and dairy products (yoghurt pots, lids), food trays, and cosmetics containers. Expanded PS (EPS) is used for protective moulded cushioning, insulated containers and fish boxes. Its use as a packaging film is marginal.
European regulatory trends and single-use packaging restrictions are progressively reducing PS use in favour of PP, PET and cellulose-based materials, with several EU member states having already implemented restrictions on EPS food-service items and single-use containers.

Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVOH / PVA)
Polivinil Alcool (PVOH / PVA)
Read all
Polyvinyl alcohol is a water-soluble synthetic polymer obtained by the hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate; the degree of hydrolysis and molecular weight determine its solubility in cold or warm water and its barrier properties.
It is unique among commodity plastic polymers in its water solubility, which represents both its principal functional advantage and its key limitation in the presence of moisture. In the dry state it offers excellent oxygen and aroma barrier, superior to EVOH at equivalent thickness; like EVOH, it requires protection by hydrophobic layers in multilayer structures to maintain barrier performance.
In packaging, PVOH finds application in two principal contexts: as a barrier layer within multilayer structures (coextruded films, coated papers, barrier pouches) in applications not directly exposed to moisture; and as a standalone water-soluble film for unit-dose packaging of laundry and dishwasher detergents, pesticides, agrochemicals and water-treatment products, where water solubility is a functionally desired property.
PVOH films are compostable and biodegradable in aquatic environments, although certification varies by grade.
Typical thicknesses for packaging films: water-soluble unit-dose films 25-76 µm (standard: 25-40 µm); as a barrier layer within multilayer structures 5-20 µm.

Polyvinylchloride (PVC)
Read all
Polyvinyl chloride is a versatile thermoplastic obtained by polymerising vinyl chloride monomer, whose properties vary considerably depending on the quantity of plasticiser added: rigid PVC (uPVC) is hard and tough, whilst plasticised PVC is flexible and soft.
Polivinil cloruro (PVC)
Historically widely used in packaging for its clarity, ease of thermoforming, high-frequency sealability and low cost, it is now in progressive decline in food packaging for environmental and regulatory reasons: the chlorine in the molecule complicates mechanical recycling, and certain plasticiser types raised toxicological concerns.
In packaging, rigid PVC is still used for pharmaceutical blister packs, trays, and electronics and cosmetics packaging; plasticised PVC for stretch cling films, cap liners and non-food applications.
European regulatory trends (PPWR, REACH restrictions) are driving substitution towards PET, PP or alternative materials.
PVC nonetheless continues to find application in non-food sectors where its specific properties, in particular high-frequency sealability and flexibility, remain difficult to replicate with alternative materials at equivalent cost and processability.
Typical thicknesses for packaging films: plasticised PVC cling film 8-15 µm.

Fabrics are flexible sheet materials produced from natural or synthetic fibres assembled by weaving, knitting, or braiding. Natural fibres used in packaging include jute (hessian), cotton, sisal, and hemp; synthetic fibres comprise polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
In packaging, woven and knitted fabrics function primarily as reusable or protective containers: bags, wraps, sacks, and flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs or "big bags") for industrial, agricultural, and horticultural goods.
Jute sacks and woven polypropylene bags remain the dominant format for bulk commodities such as grain, cement, coffee, and root vegetables.
Woven PP fabric offers excellent tensile strength, tear resistance, and low cost, making it the preferred material for heavy-duty sacks in agriculture and construction.
Natural-fibre fabrics are biodegradable and renewable, aligning with sustainability requirements for low-impact packaging.
In consumer markets, cotton and jute bags are positioned as reusable alternatives to single-use plastic bags, supported by EU regulatory restrictions on lightweight plastic bags. Premium consumer packaging employs fine woven and knitted fabrics as outer wraps for luxury goods, cosmetics, spirits, and gifts, providing tactile differentiation and perceived value that reinforces brand positioning in premium and gifting market segments.

Non-woven materials are sheet structures produced by bonding natural or synthetic fibres through mechanical (needle-punching, hydroentangling), thermal, or chemical processes, without the interlacing of woven fabrics. Their properties are defined by fibre composition, bonding method, basis weight, and thickness, which together determine mechanical performance, porosity, barrier properties, and tactile characteristics.
In packaging, non-woven materials fulfil diverse roles: protective wrapping and void-fill for fragile products, cushioning pads, sterilisation pouches for medical devices, garment bags, and inner wrapping for perishable goods where controlled breathability is beneficial.
Spunbond PP and spunbond PET are the most widely used formats in packaging, valued for their low cost, ease of processing, and compatibility with heat sealing and printing.
Flash-spun HDPE non-wovens, commercially available as Tyvek® (DuPont), offer an exceptional combination of paper-like appearance, low water vapour transmission, and puncture resistance, making them the preferred material for medical packaging sterilisation barriers and protective courier envelopes.
Bio-based and compostable non-wovens derived from PLA or natural cellulosic fibres are gaining traction in foodservice and premium consumer packaging where industrial compostability is a market or regulatory requirement.

Glass is an inorganic, non-crystalline material composed primarily of silica (SiO₂), soda ash (Na₂CO₃), and limestone (CaCO₃), melted above 1,500 °C and shaped by blowing or pressing.
In packaging, glass provides a rigid, chemically inert, and fully impermeable container that is simultaneously neutral in taste and odour, optically transparent or coloured for light protection, and suitable for long-term direct contact with all food and pharmaceutical product categories.
Soda-lime glass dominates packaging applications, covering bottles, jars, and vials across food, beverage, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics sectors.
Borosilicate glass is used where thermal shock resistance is critical.
Key selection criteria include barrier performance, chemical inertness, recyclability, container weight, and brand positioning, glass conveys premium quality and sustainability in consumer perception.
The principal environmental challenge is the energy intensity of glass manufacturing; the use of cullet (recycled glass) significantly reduces energy consumption and CO₂ emissions, each 10% increase in cullet content reduces furnace energy use by approximately 2.5%.
Industry trends include lightweighting, maximum cullet content, electric and oxy-fuel furnaces to decarbonise production, refillable bottle systems, and deposit-return schemes mandated by EU PPWR and national legislation in several European member states.
