Polistirene (PS)
Polystyrene is a thermoplastic polymer obtained by polymerising styrene, available in several structural variants: crystal PS (GPPS, transparent and brittle), high-impact PS (HIPS, rubber-toughened with polybutadiene and more ductile) and expanded polystyrene (EPS).
Crystal grades offer good clarity and ease of processing by injection moulding and thermoforming, but limited impact resistance and a low oxygen barrier.
PS has a significant environmental footprint, particularly in expanded form, and is difficult to recycle within conventional separate-collection streams.
In packaging, PS is used primarily as moulded and thermoformed articles: containers for bakery and dairy products (yoghurt pots, lids), food trays, and cosmetics containers. Expanded PS (EPS) is used for protective moulded cushioning, insulated containers and fish boxes. Its use as a packaging film is marginal.
European regulatory trends and single-use packaging restrictions are progressively reducing PS use in favour of PP, PET and cellulose-based materials, with several EU member states having already implemented restrictions on EPS food-service items and single-use containers.
Il polistirene è un polimero termoplastico ottenuto dalla polimerizzazione dello stirene, disponibile in diverse varianti strutturali: PS cristallo (GPPS, trasparente e fragile), PS ad alto impatto (HIPS, opacizzato con gomma butadienica e più tenace) e polistirene espanso (EPS).
Offre buona trasparenza nelle versioni ad alto grado cristallino, facilità di trasformazione per iniezione e termoformatura, ma resistenza agli urti limitata e bassa barriera all'ossigeno.
Presenta una significativa impronta ambientale, soprattutto nelle versioni espanse, ed è difficilmente riciclabile nelle filiere tradizionali di raccolta differenziata.
Nel confezionamento è utilizzato prevalentemente come manufatto stampato e termoformato: contenitori per prodotti da forno e dairy (vasetti per yogurt, coperchi), vassoi per alimenti, contenitori per cosmetici. Il PS espanso (EPS) trova impiego per imbottiture protettive, contenitori termici e cassette per il pesce.
L'utilizzo come film di packaging è marginale.
Le tendenze normative europee e le misure di restrizione nel packaging monouso ne stanno progressivamente riducendo l'impiego a favore di PP, PET e materiali a base cellulosa.
