Filament
Filamento
Read all
Textile element of elongated and thin shape, used as a basic unit for spinning and producing yarns and fabrics.
In technical language it can indicate a continuous thread of theoretically indefinite length, such as: in natural silk (the fibroin filament secreted by the silkworm), in chemical yarns (continuous spinning obtained by extrusion through holes in the spinneret).
It constitutes the starting point in the production of textile materials, and can be natural, artificial or synthetic, depending on the origin and the production process.

Metallics
Filati metallici
Read all
Metallic yarns or threads such as gold and silver have been used since ancient times as decoration in the clothing and textiles of kings, leaders, nobility and people of status. Metallic fibres were the first artificial fibres, created thousands of years before nylon or rayon. Historically, the metallic thread was constructed by wrapping a metal strip around a fibre core (cotton or silk), often in such a way as to reveal the colour of the fibre core to enhance the visual quality of the decoration. Ancient textiles and clothing woven from wholly or partly gold threads is sometimes referred to as Cloth of Gold.

Post-consumer waste
Rifiuti post-consumo
Read all
Textile waste generated after the product has been used by the final consumer.
It includes worn-out, discarded, or unwanted garments, linens, or other textile items from household or professional use. These materials can be reintroduced through reuse channels such as donations, collection programs or second-hand sales, or sent to textile recycling facilities. If not recovered, they are disposed of in landfills.
Pre-consumer waste
Rifiuti pre-consumo
Read all
Textile waste generated in the phases prior to use by the consumer, also commonly known as post-industrial waste.
It comes from activities such as the production of yarns and fabrics, the cutting and packaging of garments and retail sector operations (e.g. unsold, samples, unused returns). It is distinct from post-consumer waste, as it does not derive from the use of the finished product, but from the residues of the industrial and commercial processes of the textile supply chain.
Spin
Filatura
Read all
Industrial process by which textile fibres are transformed into yarn, or into a continuous thread ready for weaving or knitting. It includes a series of mechanical operations ranging from the preparation of the fibres (opening, cleaning, carding, combing) to the formation of the yarn through coupling, ironing, twisting and conditioning. In a more specific sense, it can also indicate the operation of the spinning machine that transforms the wick (still raw and thick thread) into the finished yarn. Spinning can vary based on the nature of the fibres (natural, artificial or synthetic) and the technology used (ring spinning, open-end, air spinning, etc.).
Upcycling
Upcycling
Read all
A process in which an existing product is transformed into a new item of equal or greater value and quality, without breaking it down into raw materials.
In the fashion and textile industry, this often involves disassembling used garments or fabrics to create new products, initiating a second life cycle that begins from the design phase.
Upcycling helps extend the useful life of materials, reduce waste, and engage more stakeholders in the production chain, supporting a more circular and sustainable approach.
UTP (Unfair trade practises)
Pratica commerciale sleale
Read all
Acronym for Unfair Trade Practices, it is a commercial practice in which one trading partner unilaterally imposes unfair or unethical conditions on another, breaching the principles of good faith and fair dealing.
Such practices deviate from standard business conduct and typically occur in situations of unequal bargaining power, where the weaker party is forced to accept unfavorable terms.
Unfair Trading Practices are increasingly regulated, particularly within the European Union, where the acronym UTP refers to practices addressed by the EU Directive 2019/633 on unfair trading practices in the agri-food supply chain. Similar concerns are rising in sectors such as fashion, retail, and other globalized industries.
Warp
Ordito
Read all
Set of threads arranged longitudinally on the loom during the weaving process, which form the supporting structure of the fabric. Also called chain or stamen, the warp is prepared according to a precise warping note, which establishes its number, length, tension and color. During weaving, it is interwoven with the weft (transverse threads) to form the final structure of the fabric.
