Ioniqa is a Dutch clean-tech company, spun off from Eindhoven University of Technology, specialised in creating value from PET waste through proprietary circular recycling technology. The company develops a chemical recycling/upcycling process, now associated with Denua™ technology, aimed at processing PET fractions that are difficult to treat through mechanical recycling, including post-consumer waste, mixed-colour flakes, sorter rejects and lower-quality streams. Within the packaging system, it primarily operates in prevention and end-of-life management, as it aims to close the PET loop by converting plastic waste into secondary raw material for new PET with virgin-like quality, including potential food-packaging applications. It is also relevant as a provider of technology and industrial process know-how. The case foregrounds key design trade-offs: actual recyclability, recyclate quality, scalability, process energy demand, compatibility with existing infrastructures and dependence on adequate collection and sorting streams.

Kaffeeform GmbH is a Berlin-based company developing materials and products from recycled coffee grounds and renewable resources. The project originated in 2009 from the intention to turn coffee grounds — a widely available waste material — into a durable material alternative to conventional plastics; in 2015, the company formalised a composition based on coffee grounds, renewable raw materials and biopolymers. Within the packaging system, its relevance does not concern the production of industrial primary packaging, but rather prevention, reuse and the substitution of disposable packaging, particularly through Weducer Cups, reusable containers for on-the-go consumption. Kaffeeform therefore acts as a brand owner and circular-design actor, transforming organic waste into functional and communicative objects. The case is relevant to the design trade-off between upcycling, durability, safe use, scalability, local waste collection and the actual substitution of single-use products.
Kaffeeform opera quindi come brand owner e come attore di design circolare, trasformando uno scarto organico in oggetti funzionali e comunicativi.

Renewlogy, Inc. is a US company based in Salt Lake City, Utah, founded in 2011 out of a project born at MIT by Priyanka Bakaya (CEO and founder).
It has developed a proprietary advanced chemical recycling process (pyrolysis/thermal depolymerisation) that converts mixed, low-quality plastics (including packaging plastics not otherwise mechanically recyclable, such as films, bags and multi-material plastics) into high-value products such as naphtha and fuels.
The company has built facilities in Salt Lake City and, through joint ventures, in Phoenix (Arizona, with Generated Materials Recovery) and Nova Scotia (Canada, with Sustane Technologies), alongside a marine-plastic recovery programme in India.
Renewlogy has partnered with municipalities such as Boise (Idaho) and Phoenix to process hard-to-recycle plastics (resin codes 3-7), though it has faced challenges related to contamination levels in municipally collected waste streams.
CORPORATE CHANGE AND LIKELY CESSATION OF OPERATIONS
The company, originally founded as PK Clean, operated as “Renewlogy” from around 2011 until it was renamed “Renew One” (renewone.co). PitchBook classifies the resulting entity as “Out of Business”.
A 2021 Reuters investigation had already documented the inactivity of the Salt Lake City plant (no activity for at least six months, accumulation of waste, no functioning machinery detected during a fire brigade inspection) and the failure of the pilot programme with Boise: https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/environment-plastic-oil-recycling/
