Organisations

Mapping of the network of organisations, institutions, and other actors operating within the packaging sector.

The mapping includes entities involved in research, technological development, regulation, and the dissemination of innovative practices in the field of packaging.

The collection of organisations develops progressively in relation to the content included in the Observatory, to which these actors are connected. In this way, the section offers a partial yet meaningful mapping of the ecosystem of stakeholders contributing to the evolution of the packaging sector.

Caper
Caper, now part of Instacart, is an AI-powered smart shopping cart and smart checkout platform based on computer vision, sensors, integrated scales and digital in-cart interfaces. Caper Carts allow shoppers to identify products placed in the cart, manage shopping lists, receive recommendations, view promotions, track spending and complete checkout directly in-store. Within the packaging system, its role is indirect but relevant at the retail-distribution system level: Caper does not manufacture physical packaging, materials or packaging machinery, but intervenes in the relationship between packaged products, shelves, consumers, data and checkout. Its relevance concerns the digital and communicative dimension of the extended packaging system, because packaging becomes an object recognised by computer-vision systems, an informational node in the shopping journey and a support for retail media, promotions, recommendations and analytics. The case foregrounds trade-offs between retail efficiency, personalisation, data collection, accessibility, visual-recognition accuracy and dependence on digital infrastructure.

Carlsberg Italia
Carlsberg Italia S.p.A. is the Italian company of the Carlsberg Group, with offices in Milan and a brewery in Induno Olona. It operates in the beer market through brands such as Birrificio Angelo Poretti, Carlsberg, Tuborg, Grimbergen, Brooklyn, Tucher and 1664 Blanc, directly serving large-scale retail, organised distribution and special customers, while Carlsberg Horeca S.r.l. serves the Ho.Re.Ca. channel. Within the packaging system, it primarily acts as a packaging user company and brand owner, using bottles, cans, kegs, secondary packaging and logistics packaging to protect, preserve, distribute and communicate beer and beverages. The classification includes distribution and logistics because its model covers both retail and Ho.Re.Ca. channels; it also includes prevention and end-of-life management because of initiatives related to DraughtMaster, a draught system using PET kegs without added CO₂, and the “Take Back-Give Back” project for recovering and valorising used DraughtMaster kegs. The case is relevant to design trade-offs between product protection, organoleptic quality, glass, cans, PET kegs, logistics weight, reuse/recycling, recovery infrastructure and environmental communication.
Carlsberg Italia S.p.A.

Cauli
Cauli is a UK-based company founded in 2019 by Jo and Ming, active in reusable packaging systems for foodservice, takeaway and collective catering contexts. The organisation provides a complete reuse system for food containers, coffee cups, takeaway boxes and pizza boxes, based on reusable packaging, digital identification, smart tracking, borrowing/returning and performance data. Within the packaging system, it primarily operates in prevention and end-of-life management, as it aims to replace single-use packaging with an operational reuse infrastructure. It is also a distribution and logistics actor, since the value of the solution depends on return flows, collection, washing, redistribution, traceability and flow management between users, food businesses and return points. The classification includes Packaging Solutions, Materials and Machinery because Cauli physically provides containers and system components, but its main contribution is the systemic reuse-as-a-service model. The case is relevant to the extended packaging system because it integrates packaging, user behaviour, digital infrastructure, foodservice and environmental metrics; it foregrounds trade-offs between single-use reduction, hygiene, return rates, logistics density, washing, container durability and life-cycle impacts.

Champion
Champion is an international sportswear and athletic lifestyle apparel brand, now within the Authentic Brands Group perimeter following its sale by HanesBrands. Champion Store operates as the European/Italian e-commerce platform for apparel, shoes and accessories, including iconic items such as Reverse Weave sweatshirts, hoodies, t-shirts, joggers and brand collaborations. Within the packaging system, it primarily acts as a packaging user company and brand owner, using primary, secondary, logistics and e-commerce packaging to protect, distribute and communicate textile products and accessories. The classification includes Distribution, Retail and Logistics because Champion Store structures direct online sales, order management, returns and customer service. It also includes prevention and end-of-life management in a derived sense, as the former HanesBrands perimeter stated goals to reduce packaging weight and reduce or eliminate single-use plastics; however, this information should be treated as referring to the HanesBrands phase, not necessarily as an autonomous, updated Champion Store policy after the ownership change. The case is relevant to design trade-offs between textile-product protection, e-commerce packaging, polybags, reverse logistics, brand communication, material reduction and the consistency of environmental strategies after the change in ownership.

Chiquita
Chiquita Brands International Sàrl is an international group specialised in the production, sourcing, distribution and marketing of bananas and other fresh produce. The corporate website presents Chiquita as a global banana company, with a focus on quality, service for business partners, certifications, shopper marketing and product management “from seed to shelf”. Within the packaging system, it primarily acts as a packaging user company and brand owner, using stickers, primary and secondary packaging, logistics packaging, transport systems and communication materials to identify, protect, distribute and valorise highly perishable fresh products. The classification includes Distribution, Retail and Logistics because packaging value is closely connected to transport, ripening, protection along the global supply chain and relationships with retailers. It also includes prevention and end-of-life management because Chiquita frames sustainability through its “Behind the Blue Sticker” programme and refers to optimising material use and reuse wherever possible. The case is relevant to design trade-offs between shelf life, fresh-product protection, food-waste reduction, logistics materials, brand communication, traceability and the impacts of global cold-chain and transport systems.

Happy Returns
Happy Returns is a US-based reverse logistics and returns software company, now part of UPS. The company provides a digital platform for returns and exchanges, a nationwide Return Bar® network and operational solutions that allow consumers to return products without boxes or labels. Within the packaging system, it mainly operates in distribution, reverse logistics and post-consumer management, while also playing a waste-prevention role: returns are aggregated and moved using reusable totes, reducing the need for new individual shipping packaging and simplifying the process for retailers and shoppers. The case is significant for the extended packaging system because it shows that packaging is not only a shipping container, but part of a logistical, digital and circular infrastructure affecting costs, customer experience, transport and the reduction of single-use materials.

reCIRCLE
reCIRCLE AG is a Swiss company based in Bern, founded in August 2016 by Jeannette Morath.
It developed Switzerland's first reusable packaging system for takeaway catering: washable containers (BOXes) and cups made from PBT and Tritan, lent out to network partners (restaurants, canteens, cafés, retail chains) under a “lunchbox as a service” model.
End customers collect a container, return it at any network partner after use, and either get their deposit back or reuse it again.
Since 2020 the system has expanded into Germany through a franchise agreement with the start-up Elithro GmbH, and is now active across a network spanning several European countries.
reCIRCLE received the Swiss Economic Award in 2020.
The company also offers consulting and training to catering businesses on reducing single-use packaging waste.
