Materials

Overview of packaging materials: established solutions, emerging innovations, and alternatives oriented towards sustainability.

The analysis of materials makes it possible to understand how physical properties, technical performance, and environmental characteristics influence design decisions and the behaviour of packaging throughout its life cycle.

In relation to morphologies, production processes, and models of innovation, materials constitute a fundamental dimension for interpreting the development dynamics of the packaging sector and strategies aimed at circular transition.

Non-Bending Chipboard
A thick, rigid solid board made from recycled fibres (newspapers, cartons) pressed into a dense, high-stiffness panel that does not easily fold or deform. It is also known as greyboard, grey board or rigid chipboard.

Its rigidity makes it ideal for sturdy and luxury packaging: it forms the “skeleton” of rigid (set-up) boxes (cases for cosmetics) jewellery and premium electronics, such as smartphone or perfume boxes.
As it cannot be printed directly, both faces are wrapped with printed paper or cloth laminated to the board, which provides the decorative finish.
It is also used as backing board for displays, in bookbinding (hard covers) and as protective board.
It is classified by thickness (caliper) rather than grammage: typical values from about 0.8 to over 3 mm.
Cartoncino grigio pressato

Folding Box Board (FBB)
A multi-ply paperboard with middle layers of mechanical pulp sandwiched between outer layers of bleached chemical pulp. The top layer is usually coated with a white pigment; the reverse is traditionally cream (manila), because the back chemical-pulp layer is translucent and lets the colour of the core show through. A stronger treatment of the core, or a thicker or coated back, lightens the reverse (white-back).

The light mechanical-pulp core between chemical-pulp faces gives high stiffness at low weight and good creasing.
It is the most widely used board for folding cartons in food, confectionery, cosmetics, health-and-beauty and pharmaceuticals.
In the European grade letters it is GC (gestrichener Chromokarton), as GC1 and GC2.
Typical grammage 200-350 g/m²; thickness about 305-640 µm - bulkier than SBB at equal grammage.
Cartoncino in pasta legno

White-Lined Chipboard (WLC)
White Lined Chipboard (WLC), has middle layers of recycled pulp made from mixed recovered papers. The top layer comprises either pulp made from selected recovered paper or bleached chemical pulp. Selected recovered paper is also used for the back layer. The overall content of recycled pulp varies from about 80% to 100%. The top surface will typically have 2 or 3 layers of white pigment coating and it is now usual for most WLC to have a layer of white pigment coating on the reverse side. WLC can be made with a white, grey or, sometimes brown reverse side (back).

Its recycled-fibre content makes it the most economical and lowest-footprint choice for many secondary packs and for primary packs not in contact with sensitive foods. In the European grade letters it corresponds to GD (duplex) and GT (triplex).
Typical uses: cereals and dry foods, frozen and chilled foods, detergents, confectionery, toiletries, household goods, electrical products and toys.
Barrier treatments (grease, moisture) and laminations are available.
Typical grammage 300-550 g/m²; thickness, about 400-700 µm.
Cartoncino riciclato patinato

Grammatura tipica 300-550 g/m²; spessore circa 400-700 µm.

Paperboards
Paperboard (also called cartonboard or solid board) is a cellulose-based fibrous material, generally above roughly 180-200 g/m² in grammage and thicker and stiffer than paper. It is formed from one or more plies (single- or multi-layer) of chemical, mechanical or recycled pulp, often coated with mineral pigments to improve printability and appearance.

In packaging it provides the basis for folding cartons, rigid boxes, trays, displays and liquid packaging. Selection depends on the required stiffness and thickness (caliper), food-contact compliance, print quality, mechanical and moisture resistance, as well as cost and recycled content.
Current trends favour lighter grammages at equal stiffness (downgauging), certified fibres (FSC/PEFC), plastic-free barriers and improved recyclability, in response to European regulations such as the PPWR.
Cartoncino Teso

Corrugated Boards
Corrugated board is a high-performance packaging material made from paper, consisting of two flat liners (outer sheets) glued to a central, wavy fluted medium, forming connected arches that provide exceptional strength, rigidity, cushioning, and insulation, ideal for protecting and transporting goods.

The structure of corrugared boards can be produced in two or three layers to increase its strength.
If one liner is used, the product is known as ‘single faced’
If two liners are used, one on either side of the fluting, the product is known as ‘single wall’
The combination of two flutings and three liners is called ‘double wall’, and the combination of three flutings and four liners is called ‘triple wall’.

In packaging it is the material of choice for transit cases, secondary and tertiary packaging, and, in microflute profiles, for retail-ready and consumer packs demanding high-quality

Cartone Ondulato
