Blow Moulding
Soffiatura
Blow moulding is a process in which a heated plastic tube (parison) is
inflated inside a mould until it expands and takes the mould’s shape, forming
thin-walled hollow products (e.g. bottles, vials, jars, etc.).
Key types include extrusion blow moulding (EBM), injection blow moulding
(IBM), injection stretch blow moulding (ISBM) and reheat stretch blow moulding
(RHBM).
The process typically relies on compressed air to push the softened polymer against the mould walls, where it cools and solidifies to retain the final shape. It is widely used with thermoplastic materials such as PET, HDPE, PP and PVC, and is particularly suited to high-volume production of packaging containers in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and beverage industries.
Compared to other forming processes, blow moulding offers advantages in terms of production speed, design flexibility for complex hollow geometries, and relatively low tooling costs for large production runs.
