Purpose
Directive (EU) 2024/884 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 March 2024 amends Directive 2012/19/EU on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Its aim is to strengthen the prevention of electronic waste, improve collection and treatment of WEEE, and promote a circular economy by reducing the environmental impact of electronic products and enabling more efficient recovery of valuable materials.
Scope of application
The Directive applies to EU Member States, which must transpose the amendments into national law by 9 October 2025. It covers all electrical and electronic equipment placed on the European market and the waste arising from such equipment, including obligations for both producers and WEEE management operators.
