Biodegradable Polyesters
Poliesteri biodegradabili
Biodegradable polyesters are a family of polymeric materials whose backbone consists of ester linkages that can be cleaved by enzymatic or hydrolytic action, enabling controlled biological degradation into carbon dioxide, water and biomass. They include both biologically sourced polymers and those derived from fossil monomers, united by their biodegradability.
The principal commercial representatives are:
- PLA (polylactic acid, bio-based, industrially compostable),
- PBAT (polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate, fossil-derived, compostable),
- PBS (polybutylene succinate, bio-based or fossil-derived, compostable),
- PBSA (PBS/adipate copolymer),
- PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates, bio-based, compostable and biodegradable in various environments) and the PHB and PHBV sub-families.
Most are available in commercial grades and can be converted both as flexible films (packaging films, bags, functional layers) and by injection moulding or thermoforming for containers, trays and capsules. PLA is the most widely used by volume; PHAs offer the best prospects for biodegradability in natural environments but currently command higher costs and present greater processing complexity than other members of this family.
Typical thicknesses for packaging films: 15-60 µm (PLA: 20-50 µm; starch/PBAT blends: 15-40 µm; PHA: 20-60 µm).
I poliesteri biodegradabili sono una famiglia di materiali polimerici la cui catena principale è costituita da legami estere, scissibili per azione enzimatica o idrolitica, che consentono una degradazione biologica controllata in anidride carbonica, acqua e biomassa. Comprendono sia polimeri di origine biologica sia derivati da monomeri fossili, accomunati dalla biodegradabilità.
I principali esponenti commerciali sono:
- PLA (acido polilattico, bio-based, compostabile industriale)
- PBAT (polibutilene adipato-tereftalato, fossile, compostabile)
- PBS (polibutilene succinato, bio-based o fossile, compostabile)
- PBSA (copolimero PBS/adipato)
- PHA (poliidrossialcanoati, bio-based, compostabili e biodegradabili in diversi ambienti) e le sottofamiglie PHB e PHBV.
Spessori tipici per film di confezionamento: 15-60 µm (PLA: 20-50 µm; miscele amido/PBAT: 15-40 µm; PHA: 20-60 µm).
