Felting
Process by which a fabric, especially wool, tends to thicken, becoming more compact and less permeable to air.
In common language it indicates the deterioration of the material; in the technical-textile field, however, it describes a characteristic behavior of some natural fibers, which under the effect of heat, humidity, compression or chemical agents, intertwine irreversibly, modifying the structure of the fabric.
Felting can occur involuntarily during washing, or be induced in a controlled way in industrial processes to obtain denser and more resistant fabrics.
Processo per cui un tessuto, in particolare in lana, tende a infittirsi, diventando più compatto e meno permeabile all’aria.
Nel linguaggio comune indica il deterioramento del materiale; in ambito tecnico-tessile, invece, descrive un comportamento caratteristico di alcune fibre naturali, che sotto l’effetto di calore, umidità, compressione o agenti chimici, si intrecciano in modo irreversibile, modificando la struttura del tessuto.
L’infeltrimento può avvenire involontariamente durante il lavaggio, oppure essere indotto in modo controllato nei processi industriali per ottenere tessuti più densi e resistenti.
