Packaging pervasiveness and its multiple roles in everyday life
Among the multitude of manufactured goods that populate contemporary life, packaging is one of the most pervasive. It accompanies almost all the products we buy, consume, or interact with. Integrated into domestic routines, professional environments, leisure activities, and increasingly the digital domain, it shapes daily practices. Its presence extends beyond the material sphere into the broader media ecosystem, which includes advertising, e-commerce platforms, television, and social networks. In these contexts, packaging acts as a mass-media actor, contributing to the visual and semantic construction of consumption. Like other familiar objects, it alters environments and shapes the aesthetic, semantic, and behavioural codes of everyday life. More than a simple container, packaging is a bearer of meaning and a semiotic construct that mediates between product, brand, and user. Objects function through their utility but also as systems of signs that organise meaning within consumption practices. Through its sensory and semantic properties such as form, materiality, finishes, and graphic systems, packaging influences how a product is perceived, interpreted, and experienced.
This role is particularly evident in the contemporary context, marked by globalised and decentralised production, complex regulatory frameworks, platform-mediated consumption, and growing dematerialisation. Technological advances such as track-and-trace systems, IoT devices, intelligent labelling, sensors, and scannable codes expand its capabilities, turning the container into an active interface that conveys messages while collecting, processing, and transmitting information. In sectors such as food, cosmetics, fashion, and e-commerce, particularly within the Made in Italy ecosystem, these innovations enable real-time temperature monitoring, origin verification, anti-counterfeiting checks, and personalised product information.

It requires systemic thinking: the capacity to operate within networks of interdependencies and manage the multi-scale impacts of decisions over time. It also requires anticipating multiple futures and cultivating renewed ethical sensitivity to the long-term consequences of design.
The evolution of packaging, from container to communication tool and now to information infrastructure, calls for conceptual frameworks that extend beyond product design or engineering, and for interdisciplinary approaches. Advanced Design, particularly in its intersections with Transition Design and Systemic Design, provides a valuable lens to address these challenges. Designers are increasingly called to act as mediators of knowledge, facilitators of innovation, and anticipators of future scenarios within diverse and evolving ecosystems. This role rests on the capacity to synthesise heterogeneous inputs, interpret intricate systems, and align the needs of multiple stakeholders; it has long been recognised as a foundational dimension of design.
Looking at packaging through this broader lens means approaching design as a strategic and cultural operation that involves material, symbolic, systemic, and ethical dimensions.
The multifaceted nature of a complex artefact
Packaging is an essential element for the circulation of products and a fundamental condition for accessing the commercial exchange system. It is both a technical necessity that protects and preserves its contents and an infrastructure that allows goods to be marketed, positioned, and traded. From supply chain logistics to point-of-sale display and consumption, packaging shapes how products are distributed, valued, and experienced.
In increasingly hyper-artificial environments, it functions as a bridge between production and consumption and as an interface that enables multiple relationships, for example, between brands and consumers or between users and products. According to sociocultural theories, it acts as an object of mediation, activating symbolic processes and translating product-related knowledge into experience. Every designed element, from graphics and morphology to materials and surface treatments, enhances recognition, trust, and responsible use.
This mediating dimension can be further understood through semiotic analysis, which highlights the mechanisms by which packaging produces and conveys meaning. From this perspective, the communicative effectiveness of packaging derives from the articulation between signified and signifier (from French: signifié and signifiant), the two main components of a sign. The signified represents the plane of content, while the signifier expresses the observable aspects of the sign. In packaging, the choice of graphics, materials, or structural components (signifier) supports symbolic and functional interpretations of the object (signified). This process enables users to interpret explicit textual and figurative messages, such as instructions for use or warnings, as well as implicit cues, including surface finishes or colour codes that suggest brand positioning, and structural features such as die-cuts or thumb notches that indicate how the object should be handled.
Uncoated raw cardboard combined with green graphics, for example, is often used to signal sustainability or reduced environmental impact. Yet such codes, now widely standardised and internalised, can encourage reductive interpretations or superficial associations, as in the case of greenwashing. Designing packaging, therefore, requires careful alignment between the intended message and the chosen means of expression. When conducted effectively, this process can turn sustainability from a superficial code into a transformative and regenerative narrative that supports behavioural change and systemic transitions.
The semiotic and practical dimensions of packaging are inseparable. Codes intertwine with the operational characteristics of the container, generating constant interaction between communicative and instrumental functions. These dimensions converge in what Deni (2002) defines as factitivity: the capacity of a designed object to induce practices and social behaviours through a combination of operability and signification. Packaging “teaches” users how to act, through explicit instructions for use (e.g., text, pictograms) and implicit indications, or affordances, such as colours, surface finishes, morphology, and other structural elements that shape the sequences of actions performed during interaction.
In conclusion, packaging can be described as a relational and evolving device. It shapes actions, guides interpretations, and enables meaningful interactions across material, technological, and symbolic dimensions. It may be seen both as an artefact and as a node within a broader system of relations, an ecosystem of actors, actions, and meanings that design must interpret and coordinate. This perspective shows that packaging is embedded in production and consumption networks and carries broader responsibilities for ecological and social regeneration. Within this horizon, design choices can create value that goes beyond impact reduction.
