    Main morphologies of packaging: structural typologies, formal configurations, and design solutions adopted within packaging systems.

    The analysis of morphologies enables observation of how form, structure, and the articulation of components influence functional performance, product protection, logistical dynamics, and user interaction. 

    Considered in relation to materials, production processes, and design strategies, morphologies represent a key dimension for understanding the evolution of packaging solutions and the transformations currently affecting the packaging sector.

    Shipping Carton
    A heavy-duty rigid container made of corrugated fiberboard (single, double, or triple wall), engineered to group, protect, and transport multiple product units or primary packages throughout the supply chain.

    A rugged logistical unit featuring top and bottom closing flaps (typically secured with adhesive tape). It is characterized by high stacking strength and bursting resistance, essential for palletization and long-distance transit.
    In the garment industry, it is the standard vessel for shipping production batches from factories to warehouses or retail outlets.
    Cartone
    Contenitore rigido di grandi dimensioni realizzato in cartone ondulato (a onda singola, doppia o tripla), progettato per raggruppare, proteggere e trasportare più unità di prodotto o imballaggi primari lungo la catena distributiva. Unità logistica robusta dotata di alette di chiusura superiori e inferiori (solitamente sigillate con nastro adesivo). È caratterizzata da un’elevata resistenza alla compressione verticale e allo scoppio, essenziale per la pallettizzazione e il trasporto su lunghi tragitti. Nel settore abbigliamento, è il contenitore standard per l’invio di lotti di produzione dalla fabbrica al magazzino o al punto vendita.

    Stand-up Pouch
    A pre-formed flexible packaging made of laminated or multilayer films, featuring a bottom gusset that expands to allow the bag to stand upright (stable) when filled. A modern, lightweight packaging format engineered for maximum shelf visibility and reduced material waste compared to rigid containers. It frequently incorporates reclosable features (zippers), hang holes for display, or rounded corners. In the retail sector, it provides a large surface area for high-definition branding and graphics.
    Busta stand-up
    Imballaggio flessibile pre-formato, realizzato in materiali laminati o accoppiati, dotato di un soffietto sul fondo che ne permette l’espansione e il mantenimento della posizione verticale (stabile) una volta riempito. Formato di confezionamento moderno e leggero, progettato per massimizzare la visibilità sullo scaffale e ridurre l’ingombro dei materiali rispetto ai contenitori rigidi. È spesso dotato di chiusure richiudibili (zip), asole per l’esposizione o angoli arrotondati. Offre un’ampia superficie per la stampa grafica ad alta definizione.

    Tray
    A semi-rigid, open-top container produced via thermoforming (plastic), molding (molded pulp), or deep-drawing (aluminum). It features a flat base and sidewalls that often end in a horizontal rim or flange, designed for easy handling or for securing a heat-sealed lidding film.
    Vaschetta
    Contenitore semirigido a cielo aperto, ottenuto tramite stampaggio (plastica termoformata, polpa di cellulosa) o imbutitura (alluminio). È caratterizzata da una base piana e pareti laterali svasate o dritte, terminanti spesso con un bordo perimetrale (flangia) per agevolare la manipolazione o la termosaldatura di un film di chiusura.

    Tray style carton consists of a base formed by folding like a tray a pre-cut paperboard (or corrugated board) sheet and a cover that can be hinged to the tray (usually on the long edge) or separate.
    The lid varies greatly in shape and closure method.
    Confezione a vassoio
    La confezione a vassoio consiste in una base formata per piega a mo’ di vassoio partendo da uno sbozzato in cartoncino o cartone ondulato e un coperchio che può essere incernierato al vassoio (solitamente sul bordo lungo) oppure separato.
    Il coperchio varia fortemente per forme e modalità di chiusura.

    Wide-mouth Bottle
    A rigid or semi-rigid container, typically of small to medium capacity, featuring a neck finish with a diameter significantly larger than that of a standard bottle. The wide opening is specifically engineered to allow easy access for filling and dispensing solids (such as tablets or capsules), powders, or high-viscosity liquids. It is distinguished from a standard bottle by its flow characteristics and from a jar by the presence of a distinct shoulder and a threaded neck narrower than the container body itself.
    Flacone
    Contenitore rigido o semirigido, generalmente di capacità medio-piccola, caratterizzato da un’imboccatura larga rispetto al corpo del contenitore (collo corto o assente). A differenza della bottiglia classica, il flacone è progettato per agevolare il riempimento e il prelievo di prodotti solidi (compresse, capsule), granulari, polveri o liquidi ad alta viscosità. Il flacone si distingue dal barattolo per la presenza di una spalla pronunciata e dalla boccetta per le dimensioni e l’uso prevalente.
