Morphologies


    Main morphologies of packaging: structural typologies, formal configurations, and design solutions adopted within packaging systems.

    The analysis of morphologies enables observation of how form, structure, and the articulation of components influence functional performance, product protection, logistical dynamics, and user interaction. 

    Considered in relation to materials, production processes, and design strategies, morphologies represent a key dimension for understanding the evolution of packaging solutions and the transformations currently affecting the packaging sector.

    Bag-in-box
    Flexible inner bag with dispensing valve inside a rigid outer carton.

    Some retail products are sold this way (3, 5 and 10 litres formats) However, bag-in-box packaging is also commonly used in distribution systems for industrial and hospital products, as well as for the catering and community sectors (capacities of up to 20–25 litres).

    Bag-in-Box packaging
    - reduces the amount of plastic required for a rigid container
    - allows the container to be emptied completely without air entering
    - is not suitable for use in damp environments or on wet surfaces

    Alcuni prodotti confezionati in questo modo vengono venduti al minuto (capacità 3, 5, 10 litri). Tuttavia, i bag-in-box sono comunemente usati anche nei sistemi di distribuzione di prodotti industriali e ospedalieri, destinati alla ristorazione e alle comunità (capacità fino a 20/25 litri).

    Le confezioni Bag-in-Box 
    - permettono di ridurre la quantità di plastica necessaria per avere un contenitore rigido
    - consentono il completo svuotamento del contenitore senza necessità di rientro aria
    - non sono adatte per l’uso in ambienti umidi o su superfici bagnate

    Bundle
    A secondary packaging style where two or more individual units (primary containers) are grouped together to form a single sales or handling unit. In the case of shrink wrapping, it specifically refers to Shrink-wrapped Multipack (or Banding), where a plastic film is heat-shrunk around the items to provide stability, protection, and ease of transport without the need for a rigid outer box.
    Fardello
    Tipologia di imballaggio secondario che raggruppa due o più unità singole (contenitori primari) in un’unica unità di vendita o movimentazione. Nel caso specifico del confezionamento con film termoretraibile, si definisce Fardello (o Multipack termoretratto). Questa soluzione garantisce la stabilità del carico e la protezione delle unità individuali, facilitandone il trasporto e lo stoccaggio senza l’impiego di contenitori rigidi esterni (come le scatole di cartone ondulato).

    A Clamshell Pack is single‑piece packaging structure comprising two complementary shells connected by an integral hinge, designed to close onto itself to form an enclosure for a product
    The shells and the hinge are formed from a single continuous piece of material, which may be thermoformed plastic, molded fibre, or die‑cut and folded paperboard.
    Confezione con apertura a conchiglia
    Una confezione a conchiglia è una struttura monopezzo composta da due gusci complementari collegati da una cerniera integrata, progettata per chiudersi su se stessa e formare un involucro per un prodotto.
    I gusci e la cerniera sono formati da un unico pezzo continuo di materiale, che può essere plastica termoformata, fibra stampata o cartone fustellato e piegato.

    A Hinged Lid Pack is a single-piece container where the lid is permanently joined to the body along a fixed axis, allowing it to pivot open and closed as a single unit. This integrated design is usually characterized by an elongated, vertical profile where the height of the container is notably greater than its footprint.
    Pacchetto con coperchio incernierato
    Una confezione con coperchio incernierato è un contenitore monopezzo in cui il coperchio è fissato al corpo lungo un asse fisso, consentendo di aprirlo e chiuderlo come un unico elemento. Questo design integrato è solitamente caratterizzato da un profilo verticale allungato, in cui l’altezza del contenitore è notevolmente superiore alla sua base.

    Slide Box
    A two-piece packaging unit consisting of an outer sleeve open at least at one end, and an inner tray (drawer) designed to slide horizontally in and out of the sleeve to reveal the contents. A premium packaging format known for its smooth and engaging opening motion. The dual-wall construction provides excellent structural rigidity and product protection. It is widely used for luxury fashion accessories (such as belts, ties, or jewelry) and gift sets, often featuring ribbon pulls or thumb notches to assist with the sliding action.

    Confezione composta da due elementi separati: un manicotto esterno aperto su uno o entrambi i lati, e un vassoio interno (cassetto) che scorre longitudinalmente per rivelare il contenuto. Questa confezione è caratterizzata da un movimento di apertura fluido e scenografico. La struttura a doppio strato garantisce un’ottima protezione laterale e rigidità. È la scelta d’elezione per il packaging di accessori moda (cinture, cravatte, gioielleria), piccoli dispositivi elettronici o set regalo premium, spesso arricchita da asole in tessuto o nastri per agevolare l’estrazione.

    The lid varies greatly in shape and closure method.
