Morphologies


    Main morphologies of packaging: structural typologies, formal configurations, and design solutions adopted within packaging systems.

    The analysis of morphologies enables observation of how form, structure, and the articulation of components influence functional performance, product protection, logistical dynamics, and user interaction. 

    Considered in relation to materials, production processes, and design strategies, morphologies represent a key dimension for understanding the evolution of packaging solutions and the transformations currently affecting the packaging sector.

    Barrel / Drum
    Large, rigid containers, usually cylindrical in shape, made of metal or plastic, with flat ends and an opening. They typically contain liquid products for industrial use.

    It has a capacity of approximately 180–200 litres. The cylindrical surface may be smooth or feature reinforcing ribs, which make it easier to handle (e.g. by rolling it manually on the floor). Used for transporting liquids, powders and granular materials
    Fusto
    Imballaggio rigido di grandi dimensioni, generalmente di forma cilindrica, realizzato in metallo o in materia plastica, con estremità piane e aventi un’apertura. Contengono in genere prodotti liquidi per uso industriale.

    Ha una capacità di circa 180-200 litri.
    La superficie cilindrica può essere liscia oppure dotata di nervature di irrigidimento e che ne favoriscono la manipolazione (rotazione manuale sul pavimento per es).

    Bin
    A medium-to-large-sized rigid container, usually cylindrical in shape, made of metal or plastic, with flat ends and an opening. Suitable for holding liquid, granular or powdered products for industrial use. Often comparable to a significantly smaller drum.
    Bidone
    Imballaggio rigido di dimensioni medio-grandi, generalmente di forma cilindrica, realizzato in metallo o in materia plastica, con estremità piane e aventi un’apertura. Adatto a contenere prodotti liquidi, in granuli o in polvere per uso industriale. Spesso assimilabile a un fusto di dimensioni fortemente ridotte.

    Sack
    A large, heavy-duty flexible container made of natural fabrics (jute, burlap), woven synthetic materials (polypropylene), plastic films, or multi-wall reinforced paper. It is specifically engineered for the containment and transport of bulk, heavy, or high-volume goods. Also called Industrial Bag

    A rugged packaging unit, typically open-mouth or valved, secured by stitching, tying, or gluing after filling.
    In industrial and logistics sectors, it is the primary choice for shipping raw materials, semi-finished goods, or bulk quantities of components (e.g., loose buttons or hardware in large stock batches).
    Sacco
    Contenitore flessibile di grandi dimensioni e alta resistenza, realizzato in tessuti naturali (iuta, canapa), materiali sintetici intrecciati (polipropilene), film plastici o strati multipli di carta rinforzata. È progettato per il contenimento e il trasporto di merci sfuse, pesanti o voluminose. Unità di imballaggio robusta, solitamente a bocca aperta o con valvola, chiusa tramite cucitura, legatura o incollaggio dopo il riempimento. Nel settore industriale e logistico, è lo standard per il trasporto di materie prime, semilavorati o grandi stock di componenti (es. bottoni o minuterie sfuse in grandi volumi).
