Case Studies

A curated selection of case studies documenting innovative solutions in the packaging sector across different production contexts and application fields.

The cases are catalogued according to predominantly design-driven and innovation-driven criteria, enabling observation of how materials, technologies, morphological configurations, and design strategies contribute to the evolution of packaging systems.

The comparative analysis of the cases highlights design approaches, innovation models, and emerging dynamics within contemporary supply chains. Digital technologies, sustainability strategies, and circular models are considered as interconnected dimensions contributing to the transformation of the packaging sector.

Evigence Freshness Sensors
Evigence monitors product freshness across the supply chain with smart sensors and environmental data analysis.

Founded in Israel in 2004, Evigence Sensors developed a smart sensor system that measures product freshness by monitoring cumulative temperature over time. Applied during production or packaging, the sensors can be digitally scanned to check remaining freshness at every supply chain stage. Data collected is analyzed by the Evigence Insights Engine to ensure quality, traceability, and environmental control.

PACCOR
An advanced example of digital traceability applied to packaging.

In 2020 in Germany, PACCOR introduced the use of Digimarc barcodes on rigid plastic packaging surfaces, becoming the first manufacturer to implement this technology at a commercial scale. The codes, invisible to the human eye but readable by smartphone or industrial cameras, are seamlessly embedded into the package’s graphic design. This system enables data collection and sharing throughout the entire product life cycle, from manufacturing to retail and recycling, enhancing process transparency, supporting reuse, and preventing counterfeiting. The initiative addresses the needs of Product Characteristics and Digital ID Information and Packaging Reuse, Refill and Return Facilitation (R3 Circularity Strategy).

Il progetto risponde ai need Product Characteristics and Digital ID Information e Packaging Reuse, Refill and Return Facilitation (R3 Circularity Strategy).
