Wasted
WASTED is an Amsterdam-based community initiative, developed since 2015 by CITIES Foundation, an independent organisation based in Amsterdam Noord and Stockholm, dedicated to accelerating the transition to circular cities, with support from the Municipality of Amsterdam.
The project addresses low recycling rates in urban areas through an incentive system (the “WASTED Reward System”): residents who sign up as “WASTED Neighbours” receive a kit of bags for separately collecting plastic, paper, textiles and glass; for every full bag brought to collection points or the WASTED Lab, they receive a digital coin (originally physical tokens) redeemable for discounts and benefits at a network of local partner businesses (“WASTED Rewarders”).
Launched as a pilot project in 2015 in three Amsterdam Noord neighbourhoods (Vanderpekbuurt, Bloemenbuurt, Overhoeks), the area with the city's lowest recycling rate, the system was later digitalised (via QR code scanning and photo uploads) and expanded to other neighbourhoods such as Amsterdam Oost, in partnership with local organisation De Gezonde Stad.
The project has also published “The Wasted City”, a collection of international case studies on the urban circular economy, and has explored extending the model to bulky and organic waste in partnership with the Municipality of Amsterdam's Start Up in Residence programme.
WASTED è un'iniziativa di comunità con sede ad Amsterdam, sviluppata dal 2015 da CITIES Foundation, organizzazione indipendente con base ad Amsterdam Noord e Stoccolma, dedicata ad accelerare la transizione verso città circolari, con il sostegno del Comune di Amsterdam.
Il progetto affronta il basso tasso di raccolta differenziata nelle aree urbane attraverso un sistema di incentivi (“WASTED Reward System”): i residenti che si iscrivono come “WASTED Neighbours” ricevono un kit di sacchi per la raccolta differenziata di plastica, carta, tessili e vetro; per ogni sacco pieno conferito presso i punti di raccolta o il WASTED Lab, ricevono una moneta digitale (in origine gettoni fisici) da riscattare come sconti e benefici presso una rete di esercizi commerciali locali partner (“WASTED Rewarders”).
Nato come progetto pilota nel 2015 in tre quartieri di Amsterdam Noord (Vanderpekbuurt, Bloemenbuurt, Overhoeks), l'area con il tasso di riciclo più basso della città, il sistema si è successivamente digitalizzato (tramite scansione di codici QR e caricamento di foto) ed esteso ad altri quartieri come Amsterdam Oost, in collaborazione con l'organizzazione locale De Gezonde Stad.
Il progetto ha pubblicato anche “The Wasted City”, una raccolta di casi studio internazionali sull'economia circolare urbana, e ha esplorato l'estensione del modello ai rifiuti ingombranti (bulky waste) e organici in collaborazione con il programma Start Up in Residence del Comune di Amsterdam.
