DESCRIPTION
The Design Extra kick-off event took place on 20 May at the Filla Auditorium, in Bologna’s Montagnola Park. It was an opportunity for a lively discussion on the future of education and learning. Students, alumni, representatives from businesses and institutions, and researchers shared their experiences, needs and visions, revealing a common desire: not just new formats, but new ways of learning, experimenting and creating value together. The collaborative discussion was organised into two distinct sessions, during which participants worked in small groups, using facilitation tools to gather information and ideas; existing initiatives – such as workshops, hackathons, challenges, summer schools, talks, laboratories and immersive experiences – were linked to what Design Extra could become.
IMPACTS & RESULTS
The discussion highlighted a shift from one-off engagement initiatives – which, whilst useful, are often limited in scope – towards a more continuous, open and collaborative ecosystem of actions, capable of linking learning, design experimentation, prototype development, the exploration of materials and the forging of new relationships between different stakeholders.
The envisaged directions include permanent communities, matching platforms, observatories, smart archives, collaborative technological tools, widespread laboratories, phygital residencies and long-term challenges, as well as spaces and programmes dedicated to material experimentation, prototyping and the development of concepts applicable in production and local contexts.
