Not just PET, but all polymers are seeing increased demand for recycled resins, with post-consumer recyclates (PCR) and food grade materials, seeing the greatest growth. As demand from the food and beverage packaging sectors picks up steam, expanding the volumes of PCR and food grade recycled polymer beyond PET will be a priority moving forward. What is the role of trading and distribution of circular plastics and the trade flow look like?

Last November, Mexican legislators have unanimously endorsed a proposed law that will require plastic products to contain 20 % recycled materials by 2025, and 30 % by 2030. What is the status of this proposed law and how soon will it be implemented?

As industries shift away from fossil fuels and toward sustainability, many consumer-packaged-goods (CPG) companies have committed to market products with lower environmental footprint. These commitments apply to majority of the plastic products, including packaging materials from bottles, caps, meal trays, and flexible film wrap.

Demand for circular polymers is increasing rapidly but are the capacity announcements able to keep pace with the growth projection? In Mexico, Nestle has signed an agreement with Greenback Recycling Technologies and Enval to build a chemical recycling plant for flexible plastic packaging in the country. In November 2021, ALPLA Group has opened a new plant for HDPE plastic recycling in Toluca, Mexico and planned to double its annual regrind material production capacity to 30,000 tonnes from the second half of 2022. In May, Coca-Cola Mexico has also pledged to build a recycling plant in Puerto Vallarta. Braskem has also teams with Mexico-based recycler for food-grade resins.
